Chargers

The doink story of the Chargers in 6 chapters.

Chapter 1
Doinks are an odd thing. Sometimes, the doinks are almost lab built to achieve maximum chaos, other times, the setup is far more benign and common. Far less noteworthy, at least typically, is what follows on the field. Announcers shape the story of a doink and define the moment as it will be remembered for all time. In this case, the commentators took a back seat as Bob Sanders stole the spotlight, earning a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for his showing. Sometimes, doinks do show up on the stat sheet.
Chapter 2
These were different times for kickers, it seems. Poor Taylor Mehlhaff was cut twice by the Saints in 2008 - the first after training camp, the second after a fine performance in the 2008 NFL London game that saw Taylor doink an extra point off the upright in an otherwise clean game. There did not seem to be a disciplinary reason or injury at the heart of this decision, just this lone missed 20 yard PAT.
Chapter 3
In a late-season matchup with massive playoff implications, Nick Novak provided a moment that, at least on the scoreboard, didn't matter at all. Nick Novak kicked a 37 yard attempt off the upright, leaving the score at 31-7 in favor of the Chargers (who would go on to win the game handily). The game would end up costing Baltimore the #1 seed. Instead of hosting the AFC Championship, the Ravens traveled to New England as the #2 seed, where they fell to the eventual Super Bowl runners-up in a 3-point heartbreaker. But while we're speculating, Al Michaels is reminiscing: "It hits the upright and is no good. This is what my old partner, John Madden, used to call a doink"
Chapter 4
Ty Long is best known as a punter. In fact, in his career, he only has 4 total games in which he filled the role of placekicker for the Chargers. In his week 1 debut (stepping in for an injured Michael Badgley), Long put up a clean sheet, going 1 for 1 on field goals and 3 for 3 on extra points. In the Chargers week 2 matchup with the Lions, Long's performance was not good enough to escape the off-kilter Lions, who ultimately responded with a Matt Stafford touchdown in the 4th quarter following back-to-back Chargers' possessions ending with missed field goals: The first of these misses grazed the outer edge of the upright, while the second missed wide. These would be the last missed kicks of Ty Long's career in the NFL, as he went 5 for 5 on field goals and 5 for 5 on extra points over his next 2 games before suffering a plant leg injury that created an opening for Chase McLaughlin to make his own debut. While it's unlikely that Long meets any minimum attempts requirements, he finished his NFL career with 100% accuracy on point after attempts.
Chapter 5
In a late season matchup between franchises eliminated from the playoffs and living in the shadow of the Chiefs, the Chargers and Broncos played a game that came down to 3 points. McManus's 37 yard attempt not only would have been enough to match the Chargers scoring is devastating, that it's a doink feels mean. That the previous play, nullified by a defensive offsides penalty, McManus had a doinked the upright from 5 yards further out just feels cruel.
Chapter 6
The Niners initially attempted and converted the 2-point attempt before having the try called back for holding. Instead of opting to retry the conversion, they chose to have Robbie Gould try what was now a 43 yard extra point attempt. It's a sequence that would end up having no impact on the final results, but compared to the 20 yard extra points of the pre-2015 era, this one seems like a mile.
