New York Jets @ Buffalo Bills

NYJ 9, BUF 28

Season 2012 · Week 17 · Dec 30, 2012

Ralph Wilson Stadium — Orchard Park, NY

If there was ever an instance that warranted a disputed doink label, this would be a strong candidate. The kick itself, a short-range field goal from 23 yards was partially blocked and deflected. The ball actually made it through the uprights "cleanly" (those quotes are doing heavy lifting here), and as it's finishing its trajectory, the ball hits the outside of the bottom of the goalpost. Mechanically, this kick is similar to the legendary Dawson rule-changing doink against Baltimore - the ball left the field of play and would technically be a dead ball at time of doink. Given that the Dawson kick is considered to be an iconic doink, the precedent set should be read as a kick is counted as a doink if it hits the upright at any point following its trajectory, whether or not the ball is live. Folk's deflected chip shot is a litmus test of this interpretation.
