Commanders
The doink story of the Commanders in 6 chapters.
Chapter 1
Verbally confirmed by broadcast team in Super Bowl XXII. We don't have video of this doink - yet.
Chapter 2
No video that we've yet been able to find for this early season blowout of the Redskins by the Niners, but CBS has an old post-game write-up that calls out both of the doinks.. What happened in the aftermath was even more important - David Akers was signed by Washington to take over kicking duties. Akers's tenure in Washington would be rough, but he overcame the adversity through a fresh start in Philadelphia - the rest is history.
Chapter 3
Normally, preseason games aren't noteworthy. This one is mostly no exception - one caveat, though: Another almost doink (nullified by a penalty) occurred in this same game.
Chapter 4
Ross Martin is one of the only entrants to this site who is a true kicker with 0 career attempts outside of the preseason. For statistical purposes, this doink is tracked by us, but since it's preseason, none of these stats count in the official books. Ross Martin, you may not be in the annals of NFL history, but we see you, and we salute your contributions to the game.
Chapter 5
In 2018, Norwegian rookie undrafted kicker Kaare Vedvik looked the part of a starting NFL kicker. Kaare went 9 of 9 on extra points and 8 of 9 on field goals, and his lone miss was from 50+. He completed an impressive preseason, wherein his worst kick against the visiting Redskins was an extra point that bounced in off the upright.
In the days following this game, Kaare was the victim of an off-the-field assault, which led to him missing the remainder of his rookie year on the non-football injury list. His 2018 preseason got off to a promising start as well, leading to him being traded from the Ravens to the Vikings. Kaare spent 2 preseason games in Minnesota before ultimately being waived after being unable to re-capture the magic of his rookie year.
Chapter 6
History doesn't repeat itself, but it usually rhymes. Or changes a letter, as the NFC Wild Card game between the Commanders and Buccaneers would come down to a game deciding doink. Even though they would fall in the NFC Championship game, the Commanders ended a 19-year playoff drought and did so in dramatic fashion.
