The final week of the 2018 regular season saw a middling Steelers team struggle to put away their division rival Bengals. With the Steelers regular starter, Chris Boswell, placed on injured reserve following a season where he struggled through a groin injury that almost forced an early retirement, Matt McCrane was signed as a replacement kicker. McCrane, an undrafted rookie who spent time with the Cardinals (to try out for the starting role), Raiders (to fill in for an injured Mike Nugent), and then Cardinals (to fill in for an injured Matt Prater), had a forgettable season that he capped with 2 FGs (the first of which doinked through) that propelled Pittsburgh past Cincy. Following the 2018 season, McCrane tried his leg in the short-lived XFL, getting drafted as an inaugural player for the New York Guardians in the November 2019 supplemental draft. When the XFL collapsed during the pandemic, McCrane ended up bouncing around practice squads in the NFL, never seeing another regular season snap. Unlike some other kickers whose careers didn't take off, McCrane still ended up making his mark in the history books; during the 2026 UFL season, McCrane made the first ever 4 point field goal.
