Carlos Huerta

The doink story of Carlos Huerta in 1 chapter.

Chapter 1

After beating out Kevin Butler, the Bears' all-time leading scorer, in the 1996 preseason, Carlos Huerta found himself in a 14-14 divisional battle in Week 3, lining up for a potential go-ahead 44-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. The kick, much like Huerta's brief Chicago tenure, did not go well, and both effectively ended when the ball hit the upright (Huerta was waived the very next day). Like Cody Parkey's 2019 double-doink on the same field, the low attempt may have been partially blocked at the line.

The broadcast team kept returning to it: Mike Breen circled potential contact by a Vikings defender on the telestator right after the commercial break, and the crew revisited the play again in the final minute. Breen's first call, live off the play, was simpler:

"It was blocked... by the goalpost"
